Principal Engineer Functional Safety (all genders)
Focus area of the role - Functional Safety is the critical part of the overall safety of a system or product that depends on the correct execution of specific commands and functions.
As more and more products and systems incorporate complex microelectronics and software, it is increasingly challenging to assess and implement safety-related functions.
UL is dedicated to helping customers navigate the complex technical and regulatory challenges of today’s functional safety landscape.
With our extensive certification expertise and holistic approach to safety engineering and assessment, we can help customers identify, specify and determine the functional safety of products and systems to key standards and ratings.
What you’ll learn & achieve :
After your onboarding alongside an experienced colleague, you will
Determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation and determine the project specifications such as cost, time and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction;
projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites
Communicate with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost and negotiate completion date and sample requirements
Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements
Examine samples for compliance with UL requirements and notify client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory staff and engineering assistants as well as establishing completion dates
Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact reports
Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job
Assist in the development of UL requirements, in developing special test methods and test equipment
Represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows
What makes you a great fit :
University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology or Physics is desirable but not mandatory
Several years of experience in the area of Functional Safety, Testing and Certification, Research and Development, Quality Management or similar
Good knowledge of Standards Conformity applicable to Functional Safety of electrical / electronical as well as programmable systems or autonomous systems according to ISO 21448, IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 61800-5-2, IEC 62061, ISO 13849-1, ISO 26262, IEC 60730-1, EN50126 / -128 / -129;
knowledge of UL 4600, UL 991 / UL 1998 is a plus
Experience in project- and stakeholder-management as well as in developing project-handling concepts
Fluent in Japanese and very good communication skills in English; German, French and other languages are a plus
Ability to work in an international environment and willingness to travel
