Job Description :
We are currently seeking an experienced Environmental Professional to join our Japan (JP) EHS team and play a critical role in leading the inclusion of Environmental compliance and excellence across JP business network.
The Japan Environmental Manager will be responsible for partnering with operations, facilities, and regional and site EHS teams in Japan network to execute Amazon environmental standards and JP procedures and ensure compliance with all applicable Local, State / Province and National regulations.
The successful candidate will define and refine operational supportive environmental policy, lead in rolling out JP environmental programs, assist with internal audit protocols, and support change initiatives across the JP network.
By focusing on standards, risk assessments and compliance evaluations, this individual will lead continuous improvement initiatives to minimize environmental aspects and impacts and communicate and implement best practices across JP business network.
The ideal candidate should be able to work successfully in a fast-paced environment, be an effective communicator in English and Japanese (both verbally and written), possess excellent program and environmental regulatory knowledge and act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME), and demonstrate this expertise when partnering with teams and stakeholder in Japan.
Because of the nature of the position this role will be based in Tokyo, where our JP headquarter is located. This position will directly report to APAC Environmental Program Manager.
Japan Environmental Manager Key Responsibilities :
Possess a thorough understanding of local, state / province and national environmental regulations and Amazon company standards;
Monitor country’s performance against applicable environmental regulations, programs and procedures;
Undertake regular site visits and provide guidance & training to facilitate site-level compliance with applicable regulations and conformance to Global Environmental standards & JP Procedures;
Influence and mentor EHS staff across JP network;
Responsible for setting up environmental regulatory tasks in the company environmental management system;
Provide environmental oversight and technical guidance to other JP cross functional teams;
Create and implement JP Country Level Environmental procedures to ensure operational strategy is delivered and that key elements of other critical functional processes are aligned to achieve continual environmental performance;
Partner with environmental critical functions such as Dangerous Goods, Product Compliance, Retail, Engineering, Operations, Facilities, Procurement, and Learning and Development to create working links to ensure information on environmental standards and procedures are communicated, implemented and executed among employees, vendors and contractors;
Conduct thorough and accurate environmental incident investigations and associated regulatory reports and develop appropriate corrective actions for network implementation;
Being a key contributor to the JP EHS strategy and help create functional development programs;
Support JP EHS Regional Manager and other functional development projects with technical expertise to ensure on time delivery of environmental strategy objectives;
Establish key pro-active performance metrics for the environmental compliance across the JP operations focusing on right first time’ approach and deliver these objectives;
Provide monthly and quarterly management reports to the JP EHS Regional Manager and APAC Environmental PM on a dashboard’ format with agreed operational agreed statistics;
A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science / Engineering / Management or other EHS fields
Broad knowledge of Japan environmental legislation
Preferable 5+ years of experience as an environmental (or EHS) professional
Experience with Japan regulatory risk assessments
Experience in managing and complex environmental programs for air, waste, and water
Ability to adapt to fast-paced environments with changing directions and strategy
Ability to work towards targets and within deadlines and prioritize tasks as per needs and leadership expectation
Excellent English and Japanese written and verbal communication skills
Must be willing to travel within Japan (up to 60%)
Preferred Qualifications :
Advanced degree or professional certification in environmental (or EHS-related field)
ISO 14000 or equivalent auditing experience preferred
Experience leading change in multiple site environments and the ability to influence those that are not direct reports or within your organization
Experience in a fast paced, changing / growing organization is a plus
Strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability
Proven track record of sound decision making, taking ownership and delivering results
