About Morrison & Foerster’s Tokyo Office

Our firm was one of the first international law firms to be licensed in Japan we opened our Tokyo office in 1987. Today, we have the largest and most diverse practice of any international law firm in Japan, with 120 attorneys in Tokyo (including 45 bengoshi admitted to practice in Japan).

Our firm’s clients in Tokyo include many of Japan’s most substantial and active companies, including Astellas, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Mitsui & Co.

Summer Associate Program Description

Our Tokyo office offers a US-style summer program that is unprecedented in the local market. Students accepted into the program receive valuable mentoring and networking opportunities, and work on substantive client matters.

They interact closely with attorneys of all levels (including both US attorneys and Japan-licensed attorneys) as well as with clients, and they have the opportunity to participate in various social events in and around Tokyo.

  • As a summer associate, you will receive work assignments suitable for junior associates. Typical assignments include writing briefs, motions, contracts and client memoranda;
  • assisting with drafting and negotiation sessions; assisting in depositions and witness preparation; and performing due diligence in corporate transactions.

    Ideal Candidate

    We are seeking individuals of exceptional intelligence who are eager to tackle complex and challenging problems, and who yearn to be part of a multicultural office that values diversity, teamwork, commitment, confidence, and a get-it-done attitude.

    Applicants should have a serious interest in living and working in Japan . Japanese language skills are not a prerequisite but are viewed favorably.

    A technology background is a big plus for our intellectual property practice.

    Application Process

    Applications will be accepted between November 1, 2021 and March 1, 2022. No applications will be accepted prior to November 1, 2021.

    First-round interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis in accordance with school recruiting guidelines.

  • Transcripts for all degrees (completed and in progress)
  • Writing sample of your choosing (5 to 12 pages)
